Choice of patients
The patients were operated, as is done in the hospital, according to their priority on the waiting list of the Sacred Heart and according to specific medical criteria which makes them suitable for outpatient surgery. The Foundation needed two patients (one man and one woman) who would be the Foundation’s spokesmen. Only these two patients, although on waiting lists, have received some derogation of the selection procedures.
Choice of partners
The choice of RocklandMD as the center of private surgery of surgeons participating in the public health insurance system (CMS participant) was a natural choice.
Moreover, since 2008, the RocklandMD surgery center is a trusted partner of the Hospital of the Sacred Heart of Montreal. Indeed, surgeons of HSCM have practiced more than ten thousand day surgery of any kind there, and under an agreement with the said establishment and ratified by the health agency of Montreal. Surgeons and patients who were operated there praise the excellence and quality of services provided.
The Foundation chose the RocklandMD surgery center because, to date, this surgery center is the only private surgery center that has demonstrated the ability to provide a safe environment and high levels o technical platforms for the patient requiring this type of intervention. In addition, the Hospital, as part of a recent study, has shown that the costs of surgeries performed at the RocklandMD surgery center are not necessarily higher than those incurred in the hospital for similar interventions.
It was obvious that the RocklandMD surgery center was necessary as the only choice that meets the excellence and safety criteria of the Department of Surgery HSCM. The Foundation has obtained the support of recognized companies in order to obtain a good price or even free sometimes essential supplies to interventions.
The Ronald Denis Foundation enabled to operate at no cost to patients and the hospital system more than 177 patients and restored to health by reducing wait times.
The technical costs of $ 12,000 per day paid by the Foundation are similar to fees paid to RocklandMD Surgery Center by HSCM under the Agreement surgery day with the Sacred Hospital which allowed for 2007 to operate more than 10 000 patients to date.
The remuneration of surgeons and anesthesiologists is, in turn, provided by the RAMQ, as is the case with any surgery performed in a private specialized medical center participant of the operations covered by the RAMQ.
